Over her fall break, the Ginger’s younger daughter made her first DIY lace up t-shirt. When she mentioned making one, I was clueless, but G’s d reports that DIY lace up t-shirts are super popular on college campuses right now.
The G’s d started with a cotton t-shirt, shown above on the left, purchased from a thrift store. When the DIY lace up t-shirt was finished, total invested in the project was about $16.00.
Here’s the unaltered shirt before….
….and here’s the DIYed shirt after! Impressive transformation, don’t you think?!
What’s really impressive is that there’s no sewing involved, making it a super quick and easy project.
Which I’m sure is why this is such a popular DIY fashion project right now. When researching for ideas and how-to’s for lace up tees, G’s d found this video which features at 10:20 a DIYed tee made very similarly to the one on this post. I think this shirt, with the collar still on, is adorable too.
The gallery above highlights the main steps of this DIY Lace Up T-Shirt: First, evenly mark with chalk how wide and deep you want to cut the V in the t-shirt; then with scissors cut the fabric out of the t-shirt; then cut the binding tape or strip to fit along the edge of the cut, slightly overlapping the tape at the bottom of the V; then squeeze on the fabric glue and lay on the binding tape; then evenly mark the tape with chalk where you want the eyelet holes and then make holes with paper punch; then add the eyelet rings with eyelet kit; finally, place string or cord through eyelet holes.
G’s d found this black binding on sale at JoAnn’s Fabrics, but there are a variety of fabric or pleather tapes, bands, and bindings that would work great. I’ve also seen grommet tape or eyelet tape that would save time for a DIY project like this.
Dritz is the brand of fabric glue that was used, also purchased at JoAnn’s…
…and Dritz was the brand of eyelet kit used, again, purchased at JoAnn’s…
…and this is a random photo that I think looks totally cool…
…but this is pretty cool too, don’t you think? A pretty lace bralette by Urban Outfitters pairs up perfectly underneath the finished DIY lace up t-shirt.
Be sure to buy enough string…the length of black satin string shown laced in this shirt was two yards, but it was still too short to lace through all of the eyelets! Three yards would have been long enough. No one’s worried here, though–it still turned out cute! I can see black suede cord working wonderfully also.
Try this easy DIY project that transforms a plain or ugly t-shirt into a more feminine and fashionable lace-up top. Then just add cutoffs, tennies, and shades, and you’re ready to go!
Many thanks to the Ginger’s daughter. Not only did she allow me to photograph her DIY lace up t-shirt project from start to finish, but she was such a fab model!
Have you made a DIY lace up t-shirt? I would love to see or hear about it! If you haven’t, I encourage you to try this fun and easy fashion project!
I received no samples, payments, or financial incentives from JoAnne’s Fabrics, Dritz, or Urban Outfitters for mentions, comments or links in this post.
