Know what the Wroot Wore Wednesday? This cool and breezy mini sundress that I shortened from a maxi dress! You might remember when I featured this maxi dress that I wore in a post here almost exactly a year ago.
I had not worn the maxi dress a single time since then, so I decided to get more use out of it by shortening it. I’ve already worn this updated dress three times since I shortened it, and I’m totally digging how it turned out!
I originally was going to cut the dress off and hem it, but then I got creative and decided to fold under the middle of the dress to make an extra ruffle that would complement the look of the top ruffle already there.
There are lots of maxi dresses out there in this style, with an elastic empire waist and ruffle, like this one and this one. For styles similar to this, this is a fab way to shorten without hemming and by adding a ruffle at the same time.
Here, you’ll see that I brought up the fold of the skirt to see how short I wanted it. That fold line near the elastic is what I marked with chalk.
This relatively easy sewing project only required me to decide on how short to make the dress (and how long the ruffle), to then carefully pin the folded under middle part of the dress so as to attach it to underneath the first ruffle, and then to hand sew it.
After the fold line was marked all the way around with chalk, I folded the skirt underneath to create that second ruffle, pinned it carefully while easing the fabric in with the already gathered fabric at the elastic, and then hand sewed it. The entire project took me about two hours. A more adept sewer could probably make it even faster, and on the machine.
Shown above is underneath the new ruffle where I sewed. The pink chalk doesn’t even show, but it also will wash out when I launder the dress.
You can see that the new second ruffle doesn’t have a sewn hem; rather, its fold makes its own hem.
The new flat sandals by Candie’s, found at Kohl’s add some pizzazz to this outfit…
…as does the pretty bead necklace with a striking dichroic glass pendant.
Is there a maxi dress languishing in your closet? If so, then consider shortening into a cool and fun mini sundress like I did, and then go wear it to your next summer party!
Maxi dress by Apt 9 purchased last year at Kohl’s (similar here and here), and then shortened with an extra ruffle by me, rhinestone thong sandals by Candie’s purchased at Kohl’s (same), necklace with dichroic glass pendant purchased years ago at craft show (similar).
