Maybelline’s Volum Express Waterproof Mascaras: a Ginger Wroot’s Beauty Week review!

So it’s Day 2 of Ginger Wroot’s Beauty Week! Today, I’m reviewing Maybelline’s Volum Express mascaras, more specifically The Colossal and The Mega Plush. Both mascaras arethe waterproof version. My rating for Maybelline Volume Express The Colossal waterproof mascara and for Maybelline Volum Express The Mega Plush mascara? 5 stars out of 5 to both of these rockin’ mascaras, BUT I definitely prefer The Mega Plush!

Volum Express The Colossal vs The Mega Plush

Before I go any further, a few words about waterproof mascara: if you don’t want your mascara to smudge, run or transfer, then I strongly recommend that you (1) use the waterproof version and (2) use Maybelline’s brand.

Waterproof Maybelline mascaras are the best: they never smudge

I’ve been wearing mascara for over forty years, and I used to get frustrated by how often certain brands of mascara would run and smear during hot weather, especially when I worked out.  Over many years of experimenting with different brands, I’ve found that some brands that claim to be waterproof really aren’t. Maybelline’s waterproof mascara, however, stays put. I read this review of Maybelline’s Volum Express The Mega Plush mascara, which told of disappointment that it transferred and smeared. But she didn’t use the waterproof version! Sure, it takes cold cream or a special makeup remover and some rubbing to remove waterproof mascara at night, but isn’t that the point?! For years, I’ve only purchased Maybelline’s waterproof  versions of mascara, because they’re the ones least likely to smudge, smear, run, and transfer. I have very oily skin and I sweat a lot when outside in the summer and when working out; I definitely would have “raccoon eyes” if I didn’t use Maybelline’s wonderful waterproof mascaras.

Maybelline’s Mega Plush Waterproof is my fav

So why do I prefer The Mega Plush to The  Colossal? Two main reasons: first, The Mega Plush’s flexible wand and secondly, its gel-mousse formula that goes on silky smooth.

Maybelline’s Colossal (top) and Mega Plush mascara wands

It’s hard to tell from these photos, but The Mega Plush’s wand with the indentation is flexible, made of sort of rubbery material that gives slightly when you apply pressure to it. I was amazed to find that this flexibility makes it easier to place the mascara brush closer to the eyelid and the lash roots. Weirdly perhaps, when I apply mascara, I actually half-close my lid while holding the mascara brush in front of my eye, so that the lashes drag down over the brush, while at the same time I move the brush in the opposite direction toward the lash tip–this seems to help work the brush through my lashes more quickly and thoroughly. Because The Mega Plush’s flexible wand gives less resistance, it seems to give me more control and allow the the brush to drag and stay in the lashes a little longer. Ergonomically, the flexible wand is friendlier than the stiff wand of The Colossal and of most other mascara brands.

Maybelline Colossal vs Mega Plush: the brushes and wands are definitely different

The brush shapes are slightly different too, with the Mega Plush’s bristles a bit finer, and coming out fatter in the middle of the brush–yes, its brush is a little “plusher”! But I’m not sure if the brush’s shape and bristles is what makes applying The Meta Plush easier than The Colossal–I have a feeling that the gel-mousse formula of the mascara itself is the key to The Mega Plush going on my lashes so silkily and smoothly. No, it’s not that big of a difference, but yes, I can tell. I’ve also noticed that after a long day of wearing the The Mega Plush, it’s not as brittle as The Colossal, although neither mascara has ever flaked on me before.

Maybelline Mega Plush mascara rocks

In this Maybelline VolumExpress Waterproof Mascara review, I’m awarding 5 stars out 5 to both Maybelline Volum Express The Colossal mascara (waterproof version only)and Maybelline Volum Express The Mega Plush mascara (waterproof version only).  But, as you can probably tell, I really prefer The Mega Plush for its ergonomically friendly and flexible wand and this fab mascara’s silky smooth formula that stays soft on the lashes, ever after a very long day.
