This black bean pasta with chive flowers dish was inspired by Trader Joes Black Bean Rotini, that I raved about in my post earlier this week…
…and my flowering chives in a planter on my driveway.
Like their familiar green stems, these pretty periwinkle flowers have a subtle onion flavor that complements many dishes.
The Kitchn’s post mentions that chive blossoms are often sold at farmers’ markets while in season.
And understandably so. These lovely flowers, when chopped, make such a striking garnish, especially for dishes that you want to look and taste more spring-like.
For instance, this black bean rotini and a simple alfredo sauce serving might look somewhat stark and bland by itself and unadorned. But when sprinkled with some chives and their flowers?
The dish is transformed and looks, oh so elegant and tasteful. The distinct but subtle onion flavor of the chives and their flowers is a perfect complement to not only black bean rotini with a basic alfredo cheese sauce, but also to potatoes, scrambled eggs, and salads. By the way, if you haven’t tried the Trader Joes black bean pasta, I highly recommend it. Again, you can find my five stars out of five review of TJ’s Black Bean Rotini here.
Chive flowers are in season now. Just be sure to rinse them well before chopping, and then try sprinkling them on some of your favorite dishes. You’ll love this simple and striking garnish!
